Blue-winged Kookaburra

Dacelo leachii

The Blue-winged kookaburra lives in open woodlands, swamps and farmlands in New Guinea and the northern part of Australia.

It feeds on large insects, reptiles (that might include venomous snakes), and small amphibians, birds and mammals. Although the Blue-winged kookaburrra prefers small prey, sometimes it can take creatures that are larger than itself. As other kingfishers, this bird hunts by perching on a branch or wire and waiting until spotting a prey.
